![]() In some games played on four- or six-row boards, captured seeds are reinserted into the game. In most games, the captures are removed from the board and are kept in a special hole called the "store". The capture is usually affected by the last seed dropped, but there are games in which seeds are captured en passant (a term used in chess about pawns moving two squares at the beginning of its movement) while moving around the board. But there are also several games in which it is permitted to capture on your own side. ![]() Usually, it is possible to capture marbles only on the opponent's side of the board if different players own the holes. In most Mancala games, the capturing mechanism is an essential feature of the game.Īside from the capture of marbles, some games also allow the capture of holes. Landing in an empty hole opposite to your opponent's hole that contains one or more pieces What does “capture” mean in Mancala? Sowing to end in a hole with a certain number of pieces Typically, a capture requires ending across the board from stones in specific configurations: The method of obtaining the pieces as well as the requirements differ considerably among games. Players may capture the pieces from the board depending on the last hole sown in a lap. The cycle will only stop once the last seed lands on an empty hole. ![]() In relay sowing, if the last seed lands in an occupied hole, the player must once again pick up the contents of the pit and discard them one by one. There are also multiple laps or relay sowing versions of this game, although they aren't universal. If the action stops after dropping the last seed, the game is considered a single lap game. Sowing is an appropriate term, since not only are many Mancala games played with seeds, but placing seeds one-by-one depicts the physical act of sowing. ![]() The film therefore fell into limbo and was removed from the shelves following the introduction of the Video Recordings Act 1984. There was some suggestion that the additional 18R category, recommended by the Williams Committee, might provide an acceptable solution but it soon became clear that the new category would be likely to relate only to material for sale in sex shops, where the film clearly did not belong, and this idea was dropped. At around this time, the BBFC was once again asked to consider cuts for a legitimate video release but failed to see how an acceptable version could be produced. The film received a new lease of life at the end of 1981 when it was released on video, without a BBFC certificate (until 1985 there was no formal requirement that videos should be classified by the BBFC). Although little violence is shown, the sense of menace is strong and is intensified by Sally's almost constant screaming and crying.įerman described the film as 'the pornography of terror', in that its intention seemed to be to invite the audience to revel in a vulnerable woman's distress, and concluded that the film could not be classified. Ferman concluded that the real problem lay in the extended terrorisation of Sally, which takes up the entire final section of the film. ![]() However, despite looking carefully again at the two most sadistic scenes - the killing of Pam and the attempted killing of Sally - Ferman was forced to agree with his predecessor that this was not a case where cutting the worst moments made a significant enough difference to the film. During the late 70s, Ferman was asked to look at the film on at least two separate occasions, to see whether any cuts could be made to render the film acceptable for national release. In the summer of 1975, Stephen Murphy stepped down as Secretary of the BBFC and was replaced by James Ferman. Although it was approved by a number of other local councils to whom it was submitted, some other councils shared the BBFC's misgivings and banned the film. They agreed to classify the film X without cuts for showings in London. The film was subsequently submitted to the Greater London Council in a version accidentally missing 28 seconds. Even if these elements were cut, it did nothing to alter the disturbing 'tone' of the film. ![]() This made it very difficult for the BBFC to cut the film into what might be regarded as an acceptable version since there were few moments of explicit violence that could be removed. It was noted at the time that the film relied for its effect upon creating an atmosphere of madness, threat and impeding violence, whilst shying away from showing much in the way of explicit detail. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the film was refused a certificate on 14 March 1975, partly on the basis that it was likely to prove unacceptable to the majority of local councils. The distributor reacted to this advice by making some minor reductions in the final scenes of terrorisation, formally submitting a slightly truncated version on 12 March 1975. Murphy regarded it as a good, well-made film but felt strongly that the level of terrorisation, particularly towards the end of the film, and the film's focus on 'abnormal psychology' was unsuitable for a BBFC X certificate to be issued. ![]() Tobe Hooper's seminal horror film was first seen informally by the BBFC's Secretary, Stephen Murphy, on 27 February 1975. ![]() ![]() ![]() Why can the father not return home at all? Why does the daughter work both those part-time jobs, and what is the link between them? ![]() BAKABT KITE LIBERATOR MOVIEUnfortunately there isn't enough time given the length of the movie to really understand these characters. The prologues work toghether to introduce a father-daughter relationship, and cement how they feel for each other in the viewer's mind. All are very loosely connected and in chronological order. The film is split into three parts - a prologue in space, a prologue on earth, and the main story. Kite Liberator is a short, bittersweet movie with plenty of good action scenes, but I can't help but feel it could have been so much more. And here I was thinking that my complaints would be entirely nitpicks or general complaints.Apparently a sequel was announced back in September of 2008, but considering that it's been 13 years as of this review and nothing more has come of it, I don't think it's going to come out, which is a shame. ![]() The only people who would get anything out of it, let alone watch it in the first place, would be fans of the original Kite, and I'm pretty sure all of them would be just as confused about the plot as the people coming into it blind. But considering that this came out the same year as The Sky Crawlers and Ponyo, I'm going to assume it had to do with the budget. However, I am still a big fan of Yasuomi Umetsu's art style.I can't really recommend Kite Liberator. Here, there's barely enough room to develop on the one idea that it did have.On a technical level, Kite Liberator incorporates a few shots of CGI, which is surprisingly solid, but in a few shots where it mixes the 2D and 3D animation, it is a bit awkward. Sure, it went for more of an episodic approach, but 12 episodes still had enough room to develop on what it was trying to do. BAKABT KITE LIBERATOR SERIESKite Liberator is not especially long at less than an hour later, but the original Kite was around the same length too, and it still managed to have a conclusion, even if it was left a bit vague on what the ending was.Maybe this was supposed to be another episode after this one to resolve a lot of the dangling plot threads, but it probably didn't do well enough enough to warrant making another episode, which I personally find disappointing, because It would have loved to see what the writers would have written as the conclusion for this entry of Kite. And to top it all off, it's sister series Mezzo Forte, written by the creator of this and the original Kite, Yasuomi Umetsu, managed to get a 12-episode series in the form of Mezzo DSA. But having a alien/monster?To be fair, the anime does star on a space station orbiting Earth, do it doesn't completely come out of nowhere, but it's still a weird direction to take the series. But just as soon as it introduces all of it's plots, it ends just as quickly with a cliffhanger 50 minutes later. How does a sequel to Kite have aliens, or monsters, of all things? Maybe have a similar story to the first, or include a conspiracy or two, or even just have balls to the wall action. Yes, you read that right, Kite Liberator has aliens.Well, technically they're not aliens, and it is connected to the rest of the plot, but there is still a giant monster running around Japan destroying stuff. Several years later, Kite Liberator now follows Monoka, a girl working at a maid cafe who leads a double life as an assassin, much like Sawa. And then an alien shows up. Jackson, but it still had a small cult following and it's not really really well known enough to inspire a sequel. While it isn't as explicit as the first Kite, it still features a few short scenes of characters doing creepy shit with underage girls, so if you're not into that, keep away. After the events of the first Kite, Sawa suddenly disappears after avenger her parents death with no trace of where she went. 1, along with having a few scenes from the anime being recreated for the music video for "Ex-Girlfriend" by 'No Doubt', and even having a live action movie adaptation starring Samuel L. Surprisingly, Kite managed to get a sequel.I know that Kite holds some relative importance in the world of anime since Quinten Tarintino was inspired enough by it to give to actress Chiaki Kuriyama in preparation for her role as Gogo Uubari in Kill Bill Vol. ![]() |
